If you’re like four million other Americans, you probably need braces. Now, more and more people are choosing the Invisalign treatment because of its discreet and simple method. Invisalign also has a 96% patient satisfaction rate. However, an Invisalign treatment comes with a list of dos and don’ts that you should know about beforehand. Here’s what they are.
One of the best things about an Invisalign treatment is that you can remove the trays to eat. However, you will need to make sure you brush and floss thoroughly before you put the trays back in your mouth. If you don’t, you risk trapping food in the trays against your teeth, which can cause cavities or even damage the trays.
Orthodontists will tell you that you need to soak your Invisalign trays once a day to clean them properly. Use the cleaning crystals made by Invisalign or use denture cleaners. You also need to brush the trays to scrub away any food or drink residue. However, don’t use the same toothbrush you use to clean your teeth, which could have food particles or plaque buildup.
Because your orthodontist will switch your aligners every few weeks, you will need to schedule any appointments in advance so that your Invisalign treatment stays on track. If the aligners are shipped directly to you, make sure the address is correct and that you have new aligners in advance if you’ll be out of town during a switch. If you don’t, you risk having to delay your treatment.
In order to be effective, Invisalign needs to be worn every day for 20-22 hours. You can remove the trays to eat or drink whatever you like, but remember that you will need to brush and floss before putting them back in. If you have a habit of snacking all day, you may need to switch to three larger meals instead so you’re wearing the trays long enough. And, if you drink coffee, you could stain your Invisalign trays unless your remove them. In fact, the only thing you should drink while wearing Invisalign is water.
Invisalign trays come with a case, which you should store your aligners in whenever you take them off. If you don’t, bacteria can build up on them. You also could lose or break your trays if you don’t store them in the case. You should thoroughly clean the trays anytime they’ve been left out.
You shouldn’t use colorful or scented solutions to clean your Invisalign trays, such as those found in some soaps or toothpastes. If you do, you could stain or damage the aligners or even end up with a bad aftertaste.
If you smoke, you should try to quit while you have an Invisalign treatment. Smoking will discolor the aligners quickly. If you are constantly trying to remove them to smoke, eat, and drink, you may not meet the 20-22 hours of wear per day that’s required.
An Invisalign treatment can leave you with straight teeth and a healthy smile. However, you need to make sure to follow this list of dos and don’ts.
