Congratulations on Your Journey to a Beautiful, Healthy Smile!
It’s completely normal to experience some discomfort after getting braces. Your mouth is adjusting, and while you may notice temporary changes in speech and eating habits, these will fade over time. Soon, you’ll feel more comfortable—and your new smile will be worth it!
If you experience persistent pain, a broken bracket, or any other orthodontic emergency, please contact our office. We’re here to help!
While mild discomfort is expected, here are some simple ways to manage it:
Consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever before your braces are tightened to reduce discomfort. Always check with your orthodontist before taking any medication.
Use a cotton swab or clean finger to apply an over-the-counter numbing gel directly to sore areas. This temporarily numbs the gums and reduces sensitivity.
If your braces are rubbing against your cheeks or lips, apply orthodontic wax to sharp brackets or wires to prevent irritation and sores.
Avoid crunchy or hard foods that can worsen soreness. Instead, opt for soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, soup, or oatmeal that are gentle on your teeth.
Applying an ice pack to your cheeks or drinking ice-cold water can help reduce swelling and numb soreness.
It may sound surprising, but a frozen teething ring can help relieve pressure on sore areas when gently chewed.
If cold treatments don’t provide enough relief, a warm washcloth or heating pad can help relax your mouth and ease tension.
Gargling with warm saltwater for 60 seconds can soothe gum irritation and promote healing.
Our staff understands that braces issues can cause discomfort and concern. In many cases, you or a parent can manage minor issues at home, saving you an extra trip to our office. Below are some helpful tips for handling common orthodontic concerns.
If the face bow appears bent, contact our office during business hours. If it comes out completely, wrap the bracket in tissue and bring it to your next appointment.
Try to guide the wire back into place using tweezers. If that’s not possible, clip the wire behind the last secure tooth using clean fingernail clippers. If any discomfort remains, cover the area with wax.
Use a spoon or eraser to push the wire down. If that doesn’t work, cover the wire with orthodontic wax.
No immediate action is necessary—just notify us at your next appointment.
Rinse with warm salt water and take Tylenol or Ibuprofen as needed.
This may be due to not wearing it as prescribed. If the face bow appears bent, contact our office during business hours.
If an appliance is poking or sticking out, cover it with orthodontic wax for comfort.
